The benchmark indices went on to languish in negative zone in the mid-afternoon trade, and closed the day with the BSE Sensex, down 9.10 points at 27,238.06. The Nifty 50 index was also down 6.85 points at 8,400.35. Previously, both indices hovered for a time in positive territory amid initial volatility before slipping into the negative zone.
Both the BSE Mid-Cap index Small-Cap index were down 0.03%. The market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was negative. On the BSE, 1,496 shares declined and 1,215 shares rose. A total of 346 shares were unchanged. HDFC, Axis Bank, Sun Pharma, ITC, GAIL, were positive contributors while TCS, Infosys, NTPC, Maruti Suzuki and Dr Reddy's Labs were losers.
Meanwhile, the monthly inflation all India, released by the govt, based on the consumer price index dipped to 2-years low of 3.41% in December 2016, compared with 3.63% in November 2016.
